Artist Statement

The ideas for The Fantastic realism works have been growing subconsciously in my mind for many years. In fact my first art attempts in my teens and early twenties were going in a similar direction. The fear of not being accepted and the fight for survival put them back into my subconscious mind.

Instead, and perhaps for good reason, I developed my technical skills in drawing and painting, which are seen in my representational work; Visual diaries. These realistic and impressionistic works from my travels shows the beautiful world we live in and serves as a perfect tool for teaching students in my studio and on the yearly Art tours to different countries.

In recent years my desire to look deep into my soul and express what I see in there became stronger then ever. An intimate love of nature and the human body, their shapes and colors helps me to lead you into a world of fantasy – controlled illusion, charged with emotions, which seems almost believable.

The last facet of my art is Portraits. The fascination with faces, their expressions and that which is invisible, the character of the person is something I can not let go off.

I have been a persistent contributor to The Archibald and Dough Moran portraiture prize as well as The Black Swan portraiture prize of which I have been a finalist 4 times and a winner of the Public choice prize once. My collection of 50 portraits of remarkable WA women is a testimony of passion for portraiture.

Many of my paintings are reproduced into small (usually 20) high quality, signed Limited Edition Prints on canvas. Prices are governed by the size. Please contact me for more information.

Fantastic Realism

“Fantastic Realism” is the style of painting in which the real world blends with magical/fantasy world.

I call this style “Fantastic Realism” because although the elements which make up the image are based on realism (e.g. figures, trees etc), the way they are blended together and interact with each other comes from the imagination, that is, from fantasy.

My talented friend Melanie Robinson patiently listened to my feelings and created the beautiful poems for some of the artwork; to help you find the connection, but still leaving enough space for your own imagination.

General Work

From time to time I like to distract myself with work away from my usual genres. This includes abstract art, painted silk, mosaic and sculptures.
